Activities over the Weekend

Activities over the Weekend

Plans from Andy Jones (Altrincham, Cheshire) plus Friends

OK, well I joined this fantastic car club back in 1989 aged 13, so I thought it was probably about time I put something back into the Club we all love and I volunteered to organise entertainments!

Proposed line up for the full weekend is as follows:

  • Thursday: Pint and Natter in the club bar
  • Friday: Tour of Cheshire or Anson Engine Museum visit for the engineers
  • Afternoon and early evening at Hooton Park Go-Kart
  • Friday evening in the main hall for catching up with friends and a round of Bingo
  • Saturday: visit to Llangollen Steam Railway which has '60s Weekend taking place: https://www.steamheritage.co.uk/steam-rallies-and-events/event/1960s-weekend-llangollen
  • Saturday evening entertainment in the main hall
  • Sunday: Show and Shine
  • Sunday: short drive around the Wirral with optional Mersey Tunnel detour to Pier Head
  • Sunday evening Quiz

To make this work I am going to need your help. I have taken on the role of entertaining you all, and my thought for getting as many people involved as possible was to turn the weekend into a giant competition. The plan is to have each area centre competing for points throughout the National, to be awarded a prize on the Sunday evening (sponsored by myself at Shrigley Engineering). A very simple points system will be in place: ten points 1st place, eight points second place, five points 3rd place.

We will be introducing a "What's happening" area in front of the main stage inside the club house where a points table will be updated along with information about daily runs, and evening entertainment times. If your area centre only has a few members, to make it fair we may allow you to join forces with another area centre to bring your numbers up and improve your chances of winning!

Points will be awarded for:

  • Friday afternoon: Hooton Park Go-kart endurance event. Maximum ten teams, maximum of eighth people per team
  • Friday evening: Scalextric with fastest lap times recorded
  • Saturday evening: Under 16 kids dance-off competition
  • Under 16 kids fancy dress competition
  • Adult fancy dress competition
  • "The Imp Club's Got Talent" competition. This can be anything from juggling to karaoke!
  • Adult dance-off competition
  • Points will also be awarded for each class award in the Show and Shine on Sunday so if you can't drive, dance or sing then polish your Imp!
  • Finally the quiz on Sunday evening (followed by the area centre prize giving).

To help me organise times, etc, if you are interested in taking part in any part of the above then please register your interest on the Imp Club Forum; there is a thread for Entertainment and another for Go-karting. Once we have numbers for Go-karting we'll confirm cost per head.

The theme for the fancy dress is anything you like! I really want to include as many members young and old to join in the fun. We have a fantastic sports club to use with a stage, dance area, in-house canteen, quiet area, etc. A friend has agreed to be DJ for the Saturday evening so will be taking requests after the competitions have finished, it would be great to see many of you enjoying a good dance!

We look forward to seeing you at this year's National event. I really hope we can make it enjoyable and a weekend to remember!

Friday Go-Kart Event

Andy Jones, Stuart Tranter and Ed Linton

On Friday we have the exclusive use of the large outdoor track at Hooton Park for the afternoon and early evening.

There are 9 karts available for an 80 minute endurance race, a really simple approach: the most laps completed by a team (area centre) wins. We will be awarding points for 1st, 2nd and 3rd also for the fastest lap recorded.

Each team can have up to 6 members, with driver change overs and fuel stops pre-arranged. We will try to balance the team members to keep it fair. All this will be discussed before the drivers briefing. With 80 minutes of track time available all entrants should get a good number of laps before each change over.

Please register your area centre interest and team names on the Imp Club Forum as soon as possible this will help with organisation, here's the link: https://icl.nx12.com/viewtopic.php?t=34551.

At the end of the session following the trophy awards we will be able to take the Imps onto the track for a drive around the circuit and use the drive for some photo opportunities, unfortunately licence and insurance conditions prevent us from racing Imps on the track.

The cost will be shared by each entrant and is £45 per person.

Helmets and overalls will be provided by the circuit with tea, coffee and soft drinks also available in the cafe, spectators welcome. If you bring your own, the helmet must have full face covering.

Format for afternoon:
15.00 Gates open for competitor and spectator arrivals
15.30 Karting sign-on commences
16:00 Briefing for competitors
16:45 Karting event commences (10min practice +qualifying to decide grid order)
17:00 Endurance race commences (80mins)
18:20 Endurance race completes
18:30 Trophy presentation
18:45 Imp track parade
19:00 Leave

Road Runs

Chris Simcoe, John Slinn, Bob Hawes and Bernie Booth

Friday: Sight seeing tour of Cheshire or Anson museum visit for the engineers. Visit one or more attractions that we will pass. There is something for everyone, taking in fantastic views, stately homes, Quarry Bank Mill, Jodrell Bank, the Salt Museum, Anderton Boat Lift and Ellesmere Port Boat Museum - the choice is yours. This means that those wishing to go on the run earlier in the day and then take part in the karting, or be a spectator, can do both as we will be only a short hop back to Ellesmere.
As an alternative to the Friday Drive we have organised a visit to Anson engine Museum in Poynton, south of Manchester which has a superb collection of enormous engines most of which can be heard running.

Saturday: visit to Llangollen which has a 1960s Weekend taking place. Saturday's visit to Llangollen will see us parking at one of the local railway stations before being able to take a ride on a steam or diesel train into Llangollen, with the option of returning to your parking spot on a classic rail replacement bus service or back by train. There will be classic car displays at various stations along the route with beer, food and ice cream and more cars in Llangollen. Here's the train timetable.

Sunday: short tour of the Wirral. There are many places to stop and do sight seeing if you don't wish to complete the full tour or want to get back in time for dinner and the quiz.

In the Club House

The Ballroom has a capacity for 100-500 people depending on layout and is booked for our exclusive use from Friday to Sunday.
It is the largest room at the venue with a large stage, dance floor and seating area.
This versatile room is regularly used to host large parties, dances, large conferences, dinner parties, weddings and indoor sports (including marital arts, aerobics and bowls).
It can also be partitioned to host smaller functions. The Ballroom has a large bar area and toilets which we shall be using.

There will be a quiz in the club house plus other activities for younger members and those "young at heart" as described above.
